Nitrofurantoin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Gasseri interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus gasseri with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. gasseri.
Lactobacillus gasseri preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. gasseri preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction runs in one direction only. Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic, and antibiotics don't tell the difference between the bacteria causing your urinary tract infection and the friendly Lactobacillus gasseri bacteria in a probiotic. If you swallow them at the same time, the nitrofurantoin can kill off a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms, so you may simply get less benefit from the supplement.

The good news is your nitrofurantoin still works fine for your UTI. This won't make the medicine stronger or weaker, and it won't add side effects. To protect the probiotic, just space them out by at least two hours. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drug works, so don't lose sleep over it. Lactobacillus gasseri is a 'friendly' probiotic bacterium found naturally in the human gut, mouth, and vaginal tract, and in some fermented foods. About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin) are indicated for UTIs due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for the same types of UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections of the tissue around the kidney (perinephric abscesses). Because it works primarily in the urine and does not spread widely through body tissues, it may not fully clear the infection in some patients, and the UTI may return after treatment.
