Theoretically, taking Ligilactobacillus salivarius with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. salivarius.
Ligilactobacillus salivarius preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. salivarius preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction works in one direction. Vancomycin doesn't get weaker, the probiotic does. Ligilactobacillus salivarius is a live bacterium, and vancomycin's whole job is to kill bacteria. So if you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they ever get a chance to help.

Your vancomycin will still treat the colitis it was prescribed for, so don't worry there. This is more about not wasting your probiotic. A simple fix is to space them out by at least two hours. This is based on how these two work together rather than hard studies, so it's a sensible precaution, not a danger. When in doubt, your pharmacist can help you set up a timing schedule.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand names: Vancocin, Vancoled

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
