Animal research suggests that high doses of Manchurian thorn can induce liver damage. Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Interferon beta-1b can already be hard on your liver. It's known to bump up liver enzymes, and in some people it causes more serious liver inflammation, which is why your neurologist usually checks blood work periodically while you're on it. Manchurian Thorn isn't changing how this medication works or how your body clears it. The concern is simply that both can stress the liver, so stacking them might add up.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical caution based mostly on animal studies using high doses, not real-world reports in people. So I don't want you to panic. But since liver safety already matters with Betaseron, I'd skip the supplement or at least run it by your doctor first. Tell them right away if you notice yellowing skin, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness.

What Is Interferon Beta-1b Injection Used For?

Brand names: Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia

  • Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
