Azathioprine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Manchurian Thorn interacts with.

Animal research suggests that high doses of Manchurian thorn can induce liver damage. Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.

Here's the gist: azathioprine can be tough on the liver all by itself, which is why your doctor checks your liver bloodwork while you're on it. Manchurian Thorn, in animal studies using high doses, has shown signs of liver stress too. So the worry is simple math: stacking two things that can strain the liver could, in theory, add up to more strain.

This is a theoretical concern, not something proven in people. The evidence is based on lab and animal work, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with azathioprine I'd play it safe. Watch for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual fatigue, and please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement. Don't change your azathioprine on your own.

About Azathioprine

What Is Azathioprine Used For?

Brand names: Imuran, Azamune

Azathioprine is used alongside other medications to help prevent the body from rejecting a kidney transplant (renal homotransplantation). It is also used to treat active rheumatoid arthritis — reducing signs and symptoms in adults who have not responded well enough to other treatments.

Other pain relievers such as aspirin, NSAIDs, or low-dose steroids may be continued alongside azathioprine for rheumatoid arthritis. Combining azathioprine with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) has not been well studied and is not recommended.
