Acetaminophen brand names: Tylenol Ex Strength, Children's Tylenol, Tylenol, Children's Tylenol Meltaways.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Massage and Acetaminophen in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Massage and Acetaminophen

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Acetaminophen and Massage in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Massage alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Massage at all — not against Acetaminophen, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Massage is a treatment rather than something you take. Tell whoever provides it which medicines you use, and ask your prescriber whether it is appropriate for your health and treatment. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Massage and Acetaminophen May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so having Massage while taking the medicine can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

“While rare, cases of bone fracture, as well as discomfort, soreness, bruising, and swelling of massaged tissues have been associated with massage. Approximately 10% of patients may experience minor musculoskeletal discomfort following massage. In one case report, a patient developed subcutaneous and paravertebral abscesses requiring drainage and intravenous antibiotics after massage, acupuncture, and cupping.”

Reported for Massage but not commonly for Acetaminophen: blood clots, numbness or tingling, bleeding or bruising and bone thinning.

Effects for Acetaminophen come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Massage come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 679,604 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Acetaminophen that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Massage in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Safe

When most forms of massage are administered to enhance mood and physical well-being during pregnancy and labor. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of more aggressive forms of massage, such as deep tissue massage. The use of massage should not delay the time to diagnosis or treatment with more proven therapies.

Questions About Massage or Acetaminophen

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Massage or Acetaminophen, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Acetaminophen page

“Acetaminophen (Tylenol) feels harmless because it sits on every shelf, but this list deserves real attention, mostly because of your liver. Of the 155 supplements and herbs on file, five carry a major rating, and the largest serious group, 38 ingredients, adds liver strain on top of acetaminophen's own well-known potential to harm the…”

About Massage

What is Massage?

  • Muscle tension and soreness
  • Stress and relaxation
  • Low back and neck pain
  • Anxiety and mood
  • Sleep quality
  • Recovery after exercise

Massage is a hands-on therapy that uses pressure and movement on the soft tissues of the body. It is widely used to ease muscle tension, lower stress, and help with certain types of pain, and the evidence is moderate for short-term relief of pain and anxiety. It is generally safe for most people when done by a trained therapist, but those with certain medical conditions should check with a doctor first.

Not applicable (a hands-on therapy, not an herb or supplement) · Swedish massage, deep tissue, sports massage, trigger point, shiatsu, Thai, reflexology, self-massage tools

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Massage is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Massage record says about it on its own.

Massage: dosing

There is no standard "dose" for massage. Sessions usually last from about 30 to 90 minutes, and how often people go varies widely — from once in a while for relaxation to weekly during treatment for a specific problem. The right amount depends on your goals, your body, and your budget.

Having Massage While Taking Acetaminophen: Common Questions

Is it safe to have Massage while taking Acetaminophen?
We do not list a known interaction between Massage and Acetaminophen. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Massage and Acetaminophen have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 2 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
Does Acetaminophen interact with any supplements?
Yes. Acetaminophen has documented interactions with 155 supplements in our database — Massage is not one of them. The Acetaminophen interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
