Drug & supplement interaction

Massage + Lamotrigine

Lamotrigine brand name: Lamictal.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Massage and Lamotrigine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Massage and Lamotrigine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Lamotrigine and Massage in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Massage alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Massage at all — not against Lamotrigine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Massage is a treatment rather than something you take. Tell whoever provides it which medicines you use, and ask your prescriber whether it is appropriate for your health and treatment. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Massage and Lamotrigine May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so having Massage while taking the medicine can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

Massage in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Safe

When most forms of massage are administered to enhance mood and physical well-being during pregnancy and labor. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of more aggressive forms of massage, such as deep tissue massage. The use of massage should not delay the time to diagnosis or treatment with more proven therapies.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lamotrigine page

“Alcohol, ordinary beer or wine, sits at the top of the interaction list for lamotrigine (Lamictal), with well-documented added sedation, and it sets the tone for a list I would treat with real care. About Massage

What is Massage?

  • Muscle tension and soreness
  • Stress and relaxation
  • Low back and neck pain
  • Anxiety and mood
  • Sleep quality
  • Recovery after exercise

Massage is a hands-on therapy that uses pressure and movement on the soft tissues of the body. It is widely used to ease muscle tension, lower stress, and help with certain types of pain, and the evidence is moderate for short-term relief of pain and anxiety. It is generally safe for most people when done by a trained therapist, but those with certain medical conditions should check with a doctor first.

Not applicable (a hands-on therapy, not an herb or supplement) · Swedish massage, deep tissue, sports massage, trigger point, shiatsu, Thai, reflexology, self-massage tools

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Massage is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Massage record says about it on its own.

Massage: dosing

There is no standard "dose" for massage. Sessions usually last from about 30 to 90 minutes, and how often people go varies widely — from once in a while for relaxation to weekly during treatment for a specific problem. The right amount depends on your goals, your body, and your budget.

About Lamotrigine

What Is Lamotrigine Used For?

Brand name: Lamictal

Lamotrigine is used to treat several types of seizures in adults and children aged 2 and older — including partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and seizures related to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In older teens and adults, it can also be used alone (monotherapy) after transitioning off another seizure medicine.

For adults with bipolar I disorder, lamotrigine is used as a maintenance treatment — meaning it helps delay the return of mood episodes like depression, mania, or mixed states. It is not approved to treat an active manic or mixed episode that's happening right now.

Having Massage While Taking Lamotrigine: Common Questions

Is it safe to have Massage while taking Lamotrigine?
We do not list a known interaction between Massage and Lamotrigine. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Massage and Lamotrigine have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 2 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
Does Lamotrigine interact with any supplements?
Yes. Lamotrigine has documented interactions with 116 supplements in our database — Massage is not one of them. The Lamotrigine interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
