Lamotrigine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the deal with kava and your lamotrigine (Lamictal). Kava acts as a calming agent on the brain, and lamotrigine can also cause some drowsiness, dizziness, and unsteadiness in certain people. When you put the two together, those effects can stack up. The main concern here isn't that kava changes how your body processes lamotrigine, it's that both can quiet down your nervous system, so you might feel sleepier, foggier, or less coordinated than usual.

There's another reason I'd be careful: kava has been linked to rare liver problems, and lamotrigine is best taken under steady, predictable conditions for seizure control. I wouldn't add kava without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. Please don't change your lamotrigine on your own.

Kava is a Pacific Island plant traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, and some studies suggest it may help mild anxiety. However, kava has been linked to rare but serious liver damage, so it should be used with caution, avoided by people with liver problems, and only used after talking with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Lamotrigine Used For?

Brand name: Lamictal

Lamotrigine is used to treat several types of seizures in adults and children aged 2 and older — including partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and seizures related to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In older teens and adults, it can also be used alone (monotherapy) after transitioning off another seizure medicine.

For adults with bipolar I disorder, lamotrigine is used as a maintenance treatment — meaning it helps delay the return of mood episodes like depression, mania, or mixed states. It is not approved to treat an active manic or mixed episode that's happening right now.
