Mixing beer with lamotrigine (Lamictal) isn't about one changing how the other is broken down. Lamotrigine is already active when you take it (it's not a prodrug), so the real concern here is that both alcohol and lamotrigine can act on the brain. Stacking them tends to add up.

When you drink beer while on lamotrigine, you may feel more drowsy, dizzy, unsteady on your feet, or have trouble concentrating than you would expect from either one alone. Alcohol can also lower your seizure threshold, which works against what this medicine is doing for you. This is a well-recognized, likely interaction, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor about whether any alcohol fits safely into your routine.

What Is Lamotrigine Used For?

Brand name: Lamictal

Lamotrigine is used for epilepsy. Depending on the product, it is used as add-on therapy with other seizure medicines or to switch to lamotrigine alone.

Tablets, chewable tablets, orally disintegrating tablets and Subvenite also treat bipolar I disorder. They are used as maintenance treatment to delay new mood episodes. They are not recommended for treating acute manic or mixed episodes. Extended-release products (Lamictal XR and lamotrigine extended-release) are labeled for epilepsy only, in people 13 and older.
