Mediterranean Diet and Tocilizumab

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Tocilizumab and Mediterranean Diet in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Mediterranean Diet alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Mediterranean Diet at all — not against Tocilizumab, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Mediterranean Diet is an eating pattern rather than something you take. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before changing how you eat while on a prescribed medicine: some medicines are dosed around meals, and a change in diet can change how they work. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Tocilizumab’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Mediterranean Diet. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Tocilizumab’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you follow Mediterranean Diet and take the medicine. 10 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Kidney stones Worth acting on
  • A change in thyroid levels Worth acting on
  • Bleeding in the gut Worth acting on
  • Low potassium Worth acting on
  • A low platelet count Worth acting on
  • Raised blood pressure Worth acting on
  • Shortness of breath Worth acting on
  • A severe allergic reaction Worth acting on
  • Hives Worth acting on
  • A low white blood cell count Worth acting on

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Tocilizumab. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 112,048 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Tocilizumab that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Mediterranean Diet’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Mediterranean Diet side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Mediterranean Diet has no side effects.

About Mediterranean Diet

What is Mediterranean Diet?

  • Heart health
  • Weight management
  • Type 2 diabetes prevention
  • Brain and memory health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General longevity

The Mediterranean diet is an eating pattern rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish, and olive oil, with limited red meat and processed foods. It has some of the strongest evidence of any diet for supporting heart health and is widely considered safe for most people. Talk to your doctor or a dietitian before making big changes, especially if you have a medical condition.

Whole-food eating pattern (not a pill or supplement)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Mediterranean Diet is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Mediterranean Diet record says about it on its own.

Mediterranean Diet: dosing

There is no pill or fixed "dose" for the Mediterranean diet—it is an overall pattern. The general approach is to make vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, and olive oil the base of most meals, eat fish a couple of times per week, choose nuts and seeds for snacks, and limit red meat, processed foods, and sweets.A registered dietitian can help you tailor the pattern to your calorie needs, health conditions, and food preferences.
