Acetaminophen, Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Niacin interacts with.
Niacin has been associated with cases of liver toxicity, especially when used in pharmacologic doses. Sustained-release niacin preparations appear to be associated with a higher risk of hepatotoxicity than immediate-release niacin.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the piece worth knowing about Coricidin: one of its ingredients, acetaminophen (the same medicine in Tylenol), is processed by your liver and can stress it when taken in large amounts. High-dose niacin, especially the slow-release kind, has also been linked to liver irritation. Put the two together and, at least in theory, you could be adding two small loads onto the same organ.
This is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not something proven to happen often, so try not to lose sleep over it. The bigger real-world rule is to never exceed the labeled acetaminophen dose and to go easy on alcohol. If you take prescription-strength niacin, just mention it to your pharmacist so they can check the numbers with you.
