Some Nifurtimox Products Have a Food Rule — Nux Vomica Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Nifurtimox says to take it with food. If you take Nux Vomica on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Nifurtimox with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Nifurtimox products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. Nux vomica comes from a tree seed that contains strychnine, a powerful and potentially deadly poison. It is mostly sold today in extremely diluted homeopathic forms, and there is no good scientific evidence that it treats any condition. Because even small amounts of the raw or concentrated material can cause severe poisoning, it is best avoided unless you are using a properly prepared product under professional guidance.

What Is Nifurtimox Used For?

Brand name: Lampit

Lampit (nifurtimox) is approved to treat Chagas disease (American Trypanosomiasis), a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Lampit is approved specifically for pediatric patients from birth to under 18 years of age who weigh at least 2.5 kg (about 5.5 lbs).

Chagas disease can affect both the blood and tissues. Nifurtimox works against multiple forms of the parasite, including those inside and outside of cells.
