Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like other charcoal products, with a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut. If your child takes their Nifurtimox (Lampit) too close to a dose of coffee charcoal, the charcoal may bind some of the medicine before the body can absorb it. That could mean less Nifurtimox actually gets into the bloodstream, and with a Chagas disease treatment, you really want the full dose working to clear the parasite.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how charcoal behaves, not proven studies. To be safe, separate the two by at least two hours. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these, and don't change the Nifurtimox schedule on your own.

What Is Nifurtimox Used For?

Brand name: Lampit

Lampit (nifurtimox) is approved to treat Chagas disease (American Trypanosomiasis), a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Lampit is approved specifically for pediatric patients from birth to under 18 years of age who weigh at least 2.5 kg (about 5.5 lbs).

Chagas disease can affect both the blood and tissues. Nifurtimox works against multiple forms of the parasite, including those inside and outside of cells.
