Onion and Adalimumab

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Adalimumab and Onion in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Onion safety at a glance

Onion overall Generally safe Onion as a food is generally safe for most people; concentrated supplements are less studied.
Pregnancy Use caution Food amounts are considered fine, but concentrated supplement doses are not well studied and should be avoided.
Breastfeeding Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but there is not enough evidence on medicinal supplement doses.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Adalimumab

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Adalimumab is filed under a single classification — immunosuppressants. Onion has documented interactions with 5 drug classes — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate), antidiabetes drugs (moderate) and aspirin (moderate) — and none of Adalimumab’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Adalimumab. It is the side-effect record for Onion on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. • A severe allergic reaction Worth acting on Additional detail

“Allergy to onion is rare, although there are reports of symptoms to both oral and topical exposure. In one case, oral exposure or the aroma of onions caused the sensation of throat closing in an allergic woman. In a 35-year-old man, cooked onion ingestion triggered anaphylaxis. In another case, the smell of onion was identified as a trigger for migraines in a 32-year-old female.”

This page covers Onion only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Adalimumab page lists 53 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Adalimumab page

“Adalimumab (Humira) works by dialing down an overactive immune system, which is what makes this list so uniform: all 53 supplements on file are flagged for one reason, they may stimulate immunity and could, in theory, blunt the drug's effect. None of the interactions is rated major (52 are moderate, one minor), so for most people this…”

About Onion

What is Onion?

Onion
  • Colds and respiratory symptoms
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial and wound care
  • Scar appearance (topical gels)

Onion is a common food with a long history in traditional medicine, and it contains antioxidants like quercetin and sulfur compounds. Eating onion as part of a balanced diet is safe for most people, but high-dose supplements have only limited human evidence for any specific health condition. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated onion products for a medical reason.

Allium cepa · Amaryllidaceae · Bulb (and sometimes the green leaves and extracted juice) · Fresh bulb, juice, dried powder, capsules, extracts, and topical gels

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Onion is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Onion record says about it on its own.

Onion: dosing

There is no official standardized dose of onion for any health condition. As a food, onion is simply eaten in normal cooking amounts. For supplements, gels, and extracts, the right amount depends on the specific product and how concentrated it is.If you choose to use an onion supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount.
