Why this applies to Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate

Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Oregon Grape interacts with.

Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of Oregon grape, can have sedative effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combo product pairs amobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the brain, with ephedrine, a stimulant. The piece that matters here is the amobarbital. The berberine in Oregon grape may have mild sedative effects of its own, so in theory it could add to amobarbital's drowsiness. That might leave you feeling extra sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or slowed down. Amobarbital is not activated by an enzyme that berberine blocks, so this is about effects stacking, not a prodrug situation.

Honestly, this concern rests only on animal research, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since barbiturates are potent, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. Please don't change any dose on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate page

“Ephedrine & Amytal pairs a barbiturate sedative, amobarbital, with the stimulant ephedrine, so the supplements that interact with it pull in two directions at once, and I would treat this list with genuine care. Ten of the 132 ingredients on file are rated major: alcohol and kava can deepen the sedation toward dangerously slowed breath…”
