Moderate

QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS

Why this applies to Berotralstat Hydrochloride

Berotralstat Hydrochloride falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Panax Ginseng interacts with.

Theoretically, Panax ginseng has an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval and potentially increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias. However, research is conflicting.
Clinical research shows that short-term use of Panax ginseng can increase the QT interval. However, no changes in QT interval have been identified with prolonged use.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the connection worth knowing. Berotralstat (Orladeyo), which you take to prevent hereditary angioedema attacks, is one of those medicines that can slightly stretch out the heart's electrical cycle, what doctors call the QT interval. Panax ginseng may do something similar on its own, at least with short-term use. Put them together and the small effects could in theory add up, which in rare cases can lead to an irregular heartbeat.

That said, I don't want to overstate this. The evidence is mixed and mostly theoretical, and longer-term ginseng use hasn't shown the same change. For most people this won't cause trouble, but if you have heart rhythm issues or take other QT-affecting drugs, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding ginseng.
