Here's the idea behind this one. Panax ginseng may gently rev up your immune system, and mercaptopurine is working hard to do the opposite by calming the immune cells and slowing the growth of leukemia cells. So in theory, ginseng could push against what your medicine is trying to accomplish. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern. We don't have solid studies in people showing it actually weakens mercaptopurine, so it's a caution, not a proven problem.

Because mercaptopurine treats a serious condition, I'd play it safe and not add ginseng on your own. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first. They know your blood counts and full treatment plan and can tell you what's right for you.

What Is Mercaptopurine Used For?

Mercaptopurine — available as a tablet and as an oral suspension — is used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer. It is given as part of a combination chemotherapy maintenance regimen, meaning it works alongside other cancer medicines to keep leukemia in remission.

Both the tablet form and the oral suspension form carry this indication for adult and pediatric patients. The oral suspension is particularly useful for patients who cannot swallow tablets.
