Why this applies to Vincristine Sulfate

Vincristine Sulfate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Peony interacts with.

Theoretically, use of peony may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Vincristine is a chemotherapy drug that your body clears using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The idea here is that peony may slow that enzyme down a little. If that happens, vincristine could hang around longer in your body and build up. With this particular drug, that's a real concern, because vincristine's side effects tend to get worse at higher levels. We're talking about nerve-related problems like numbness, tingling, weakness, constipation, and jaw or muscle pain, along with low blood counts.

That said, I want to be honest about the strength of this. This warning comes only from lab and test-tube studies, not from people. It hasn't been seen in actual patients. Still, because vincristine is potent and dosed carefully, please don't add peony without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist.
