Budesonide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Peony interacts with.

Theoretically, use of peony may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for budesonide. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this steroid down. Lab studies hint that peony may gently slow that same enzyme. If it does, your body could clear budesonide a little more slowly, leaving more of it active in your system. That could mean more of the usual steroid side effects over time, like fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood changes, or trouble sleeping.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. So far this is only test-tube and animal data, and it has never been confirmed in people taking peony. It may not matter at all. Still, because budesonide is a steroid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Budesonide Used For?

Brand names: Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris, Tarpeyo, Eohilia

Budesonide inhalation suspension is used as a maintenance (long-term control) treatment for asthma in children 12 months to 8 years old. It also works as a preventive (prophylactic) therapy to reduce the frequency of asthma symptoms.

Important: This medication is not a rescue inhaler. It will not stop a sudden asthma attack. A separate fast-acting bronchodilator is needed for sudden symptoms.
