Why this applies to Desipramine

Desipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Peony interacts with.

Theoretically, use of peony may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with peony and your desipramine. Part of how your body clears desipramine relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In lab and animal studies, peony seems to gently slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, your desipramine could clear a bit more slowly and build up, which may mean stronger effects and more of the usual side effects: dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness on standing, drowsiness, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest, though. This is theoretical right now, based only on test-tube and animal work, and it hasn't been shown in humans. Desipramine is a drug where blood levels do matter, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding peony.

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
