Why this applies to Temazepam

Temazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Peppermint interacts with.

Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that a single dose of peppermint oil 600 mg inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes and increases the AUC of felodipine, a CYP3A4 substrate. However, in vitro research suggests that peppermint oil only inhibits CYP3A4 at very high concentrations.

Here's the gist for Temazepam (Restoril). Concentrated peppermint oil may gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear this sleep medicine. If that pathway slows, a bit more temazepam can linger in your system, which could mean stronger or longer effects like next-morning grogginess, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

That said, the evidence here is on the weaker side, and the enzyme-blocking effect mostly showed up with a hefty 600 mg dose of peppermint oil, not a cup of peppermint tea or a mint. So culinary amounts are unlikely to matter much. If you take peppermint oil capsules regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how sleepy you feel.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
