Small clinical studies suggest that Phaseolus vulgaris beans or bean pods, ingested alone or along with white mulberry leaf and bilberry, reduce blood glucose levels in some patients with diabetes.

Here's the basic idea: Levemir (insulin detemir) already does the heavy lifting of lowering your blood sugar. White bean extract may slow how much starch you digest, which can nudge blood sugar a little lower on its own. Stack those two together and the worry is your sugar dipping too low, what we call hypoglycemia. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

Now, I don't want to overstate this. The evidence here is pretty thin, mostly anecdotal and small studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Insulin is a tight drug to dose, though, so it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding the supplement, and keep an eye on your glucose readings if you do.

Levemir (insulin detemir) is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is a basal insulin, meaning it works around the clock to keep background blood sugar levels steady.

Levemir is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood that requires a different type of insulin).
