Why this applies to Elbasvir, Grazoprevir

Elbasvir, Grazoprevir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Zepatier (elbasvir/grazoprevir) and propolis. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this hepatitis C medication. In a test tube, some propolis compounds can slow that enzyme down, which in theory could let more of the drug build up in your blood. With higher levels, you might notice more of grazoprevir's known effects, like headache, tiredness, nausea, or shifts in liver-related blood tests.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. The evidence here is very weak, coming only from lab and animal studies, and the concern hasn't actually shown up in people. Other lab work found no effect at all. Normal propolis use is unlikely to cause trouble, but since liver treatment matters, just mention any propolis to your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

What Is Elbasvir and Grazoprevir Used For?

Brand name: Zepatier

Zepatier is used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 or genotype 4 infection in adults and children 12 years of age and older (or weighing at least 30 kg). It works against both the most common strain of HCV (genotype 1) and genotype 4.

Depending on the specific genotype, prior treatment history, and certain viral characteristics, Zepatier may be prescribed alone or combined with another antiviral medicine called ribavirin. Your prescriber will determine the right regimen and duration for your situation.
