Why this applies to Prednisolone

Prednisolone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with propolis and prednisolone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear prednisolone out of your system. In a test tube, some propolis compounds can slow that enzyme down, which in theory could let prednisolone build up a bit and lead to more of the usual steroid effects, things like trouble sleeping, mood swings, a bump in blood sugar, fluid retention, or stomach upset.

That said, I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from lab and animal studies, and animal research actually showed no real effect. Nothing like this has been reported in people, and normal propolis use is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you take high-dose propolis regularly, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor.

Prednisolone is prescribed for many different conditions where inflammation or an overactive immune system is causing harm. These range from severe allergic reactions and asthma to certain skin diseases, blood disorders, eye problems, and some cancers.

It is also used to support the body when the adrenal glands aren't making enough of their own steroids, and to manage flares of conditions like ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and nephrotic syndrome (a kidney condition causing protein loss in the urine).
