Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP1A2. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP1A2 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP1A2 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Lybrel is a birth control pill that combines ethinyl estradiol with levonorgestrel. The estrogen part is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In test-tube studies, propolis can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, estrogen levels could nudge up slightly, which in theory might mean more typical estrogen-related effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

Here's the reassuring part: this concern comes only from lab work, and animal studies didn't show a real effect, likely because propolis is poorly absorbed and the liver clears it fast. It has never been reported in people. Food or normal lozenge amounts are very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated propolis daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. Lybrel combines two hormones (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) that your liver clears in part through an enzyme called CYP3A4. The thought here is that propolis might slow that enzyme down, which could let hormone levels drift a little higher than usual. In theory, that might mean more of the typical pill side effects, like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or breakthrough spotting.

Here's the honest part: this concern comes only from lab and animal studies, and even the lab results disagree. It has never been shown to happen in real people, likely because propolis doesn't get absorbed well enough to matter. Occasional propolis use is unlikely to be a problem, but if you take it daily in concentrated doses, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
