Drug & supplement interaction

Quince + Hydroxychloroquine

Hydroxychloroquine brand name: Plaquenil.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Quince and Hydroxychloroquine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Hydroxychloroquine states a food rule worth keeping to.

Quince and Hydroxychloroquine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Hydroxychloroquine and Quince in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Quince at all — not against Hydroxychloroquine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Quince safety at a glance

Quince overall Use caution Quince as a food is generally well tolerated, but concentrated supplements are not well studied.
Pregnancy Use caution Quince as food is likely fine, but concentrated extracts or seed products lack safety data, so use caution.
Breastfeeding Use caution There is not enough reliable information on quince supplements during breastfeeding, so caution is advised.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

  • Hearing loss Worth acting on
  • Muscle weakness Worth acting on
  • Unsteadiness Worth acting on
  • Low blood sugar Worth acting on

Read the label on DailyMed › Quince’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Quince side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Quince has no side effects.

How to take them

Some Hydroxychloroquine Products Have a Food Rule — Quince Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Hydroxychloroquine says to take it with food. If you take Quince on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Hydroxychloroquine with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Hydroxychloroquine products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

Rheumatoid Arthritis in Adults ( 2.3 ): Initial dosage: 400 mg to 600 mg daily Chronic dosage: 200 mg once daily or 400 mg once daily (or in two divided doses) Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in Adults ( 2.4 ): 200 mg once daily or 400 mg once daily (or in two divided doses) Chronic Discoid Lupus Erythematosus in Adults ( 2.5 ): 200 mg once daily or 400 mg once daily (or in two divided doses) 2.1 Imp

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Hydroxychloroquine page

“Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) can stretch the QT interval on its own, the pause between heartbeats that, prolonged too far, can trigger a dangerous rhythm. Thirteen of the supplements and herbs on this page add to that same effect, grapefruit in large amounts among them, and that overlap is why this list calls for genuine care rather…”

About Quince

What is Quince?

  • Digestive upset and diarrhea
  • Acid reflux and heartburn
  • Sore throat and cough
  • Skin soothing and wound care
  • Nausea

Quince is a tart, apple-like fruit traditionally used for digestive complaints, reflux, and soothing the throat and skin. Early research is interesting but limited, so quince should not replace proven treatments. Enjoying cooked quince in food is generally fine, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

Cydonia oblonga · Rosaceae · Fruit, seeds, and leaves · Fresh fruit, jam or jelly, syrup, tea, dried seeds, capsules, extracts

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Quince is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Quince record says about it on its own.

Quince: dosing

There is no standardized or proven dose for quince supplements. The right amount depends on the product, the part of the plant used, and how it is prepared, which varies a lot between brands. If you choose to use a quince product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the suggested amount. Avoid eating raw or crushed seeds.

About Hydroxychloroquine

What Is Hydroxychloroquine Used For?

Brand name: Plaquenil

Hydroxychloroquine tablets are used to treat uncomplicated malaria and to help prevent malaria in areas where the parasite has not developed resistance to it — in both adults and children. It is also used in adults to treat rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and chronic discoid lupus erythematosus.

There are important limits: it is not recommended for complicated or drug-resistant malaria, malaria acquired in regions where resistance is known, or to prevent malaria relapses caused by P. vivax or P. ovale. Its use for the autoimmune conditions (rheumatoid arthritis and lupus) is approved for adults only.
