Sage + Flurbiprofen
Flurbiprofen brand names: Ansaid, Flurbiprofen, Froben, Flurprofen, Froben SR, and others.
Sage has a moderate interaction with Flurbiprofen. Theoretically, sage might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Flurbiprofen
Flurbiprofen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Sage interacts with.
In vitro evidence suggests that aqueous extracts of sage can inhibit CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body clears flurbiprofen mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab tests (not in real people yet), water-based sage extracts appear to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, flurbiprofen could hang around a bit longer and its effects could be amplified. For an NSAID like this, that might mean more of the usual issues, things like stomach upset, heartburn, a higher risk of stomach irritation or bleeding, and fluid retention.
The good news is this is theoretical and based only on test-tube data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. A sprinkle of sage on dinner is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage capsules or oil are where I'd be more cautious. If you're taking those daily, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Flurbiprofen page
“Anyone taking flurbiprofen (Ansaid), an NSAID pain reliever, should treat this list with genuine care, starting with the entries that pile onto the drug's own weak points, the stomach lining and the kidneys. Drinking alcohol, beer and wine both make the list, raises the chance of stomach bleeding beyond what any NSAID already carries,…”

About Sage
What is Sage?
- Sore throat and mouth irritation
- Digestive upset
- Excessive sweating
- Memory and thinking
- Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
- General antioxidant support
Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.
About Flurbiprofen
What Is Flurbiprofen Used For?
Brand names: Ansaid, Flurbiprofen, Froben, Flurprofen, Froben SR, Ocufen
Flurbiprofen tablets (including Lurbiro) are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Flurbiprofen sodium eye drops are used for a different purpose. They help inhibit intraoperative miosis, which is the pupil narrowing during eye surgery.
