Sage + Triamcinolone
Triamcinolone brand names: Aristocort, Kenacort, Adcortyl Intra-articular / Intradermal, Kenalog Intra-articular / Intramuscular, Adcortyl in Orabase, and others.
Sage has a moderate interaction with Triamcinolone. Theoretically, sage might increase levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Triamcinolone
Triamcinolone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Sage interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that common sage (Salvia officinalis) can inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for sage and triamcinolone. Triamcinolone is a corticosteroid, and one of the proteins that helps move it around and out of your body is a pump called P-glycoprotein. Lab studies hint that sage may slow that pump down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more triamcinolone stick around, which might nudge up steroid-type effects like fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood changes, or trouble sleeping.
The important word here is theoretical. This was only seen in test-tube research, never confirmed in people, and cooking with sage in your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage extracts or essential oils are a different story. Before adding a sage supplement, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Triamcinolone page
“Triamcinolone, the steroid in Kenalog injections, Aristocort, and several creams and dental pastes, earns real caution with supplements, and the three major-rated pairings are the ones to understand first. St.”

About Sage
What is Sage?
- Sore throat and mouth irritation
- Digestive upset
- Excessive sweating
- Memory and thinking
- Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
- General antioxidant support
Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.
About Triamcinolone
What Is Triamcinolone Used For?
Brand names: Aristocort, Kenacort, Adcortyl Intra-articular / Intradermal, Kenalog Intra-articular / Intramuscular, Adcortyl in Orabase, Triesence
Triamcinolone is available in many forms — injections, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, dental pastes, and eye injections — each approved for specific uses. Injectable forms given into muscle are used when oral steroids aren't an option, covering severe allergies (like asthma flares, severe skin reactions, drug reactions, and serum sickness), serious skin diseases, certain endocrine (hormonal) disorders, and more.
Injections given directly into a joint (intra-articular) or soft tissue help with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout flares, bursitis, and tendon inflammation. Injections into skin lesions (intralesional) treat conditions such as keloids, alopecia areata, and psoriatic plaques. Triesence (an ophthalmic injection) is specifically indicated for eye conditions like uveitis and temporal arteritis, and for visualization during eye surgery. Topical creams, ointments, lotions, and sprays relieve itching and inflammation from corticosteroid-responsive skin conditions. Dental paste forms (Oralone, Kourzeq) treat painful mouth sores from injury. Nasal sprays temporarily relieve hay fever and upper respiratory allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and congestion.

Triamcinolone Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Triamcinolone as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Sage — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
