Here's the gist with slippery elm and Xanax (alprazolam). Slippery elm forms a slick, gel-like layer in your stomach and gut. The concern is that this gooey coating could, in theory, slow down or slightly reduce how much alprazolam your body absorbs. If less drug gets in, you might notice it working a bit less well, so your anxiety or panic symptoms may not feel as controlled.

To be clear, this is a theoretical worry based on how the mucilage behaves, not something proven in real patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. A simple fix is spacing them out, taking your alprazolam a couple of hours apart from the slippery elm. Before you change anything, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
