Here's the simple version: slippery elm turns into a slick, sticky gel when it hits water. That gel can coat the inside of your stomach and gut, and in theory it might form a barrier that keeps part of your atomoxetine (Strattera) from being absorbed as well. If less gets into your bloodstream, you could notice it working a little less for your ADHD symptoms, meaning more trouble focusing or sitting still.

I want to be honest, though, this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not on real studies with this medicine. It's a low-stakes, easy fix: just separate them by a couple of hours, taking your atomoxetine first and the slippery elm later. Before adding it, run it past your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Atomoxetine Used For?

Brand name: Strattera

Atomoxetine — available as capsules (Atomoxetine, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Strattera) and as an oral solution (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Atoncy) — is approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older. It is meant to be part of a total treatment program that may also include psychological, educational, and social supports.

ADHD is diagnosed when persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity cause meaningful problems in daily life — at school, at work, or at home — in more than one setting. Atomoxetine is not approved to treat major depressive disorder.
