Why this applies to Grepafloxacin

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with grepafloxacin, an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family. The thinking is that the slick, gel-like mucilage in slippery elm can form a coating in your gut. That coating may keep some of the antibiotic from being fully absorbed, so a bit less of it actually reaches your bloodstream. With an antibiotic, getting the full dose in matters, since lower levels could mean the medicine doesn't knock out the infection as well.

I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the fiber behaves rather than on real patient studies. A simple fix is timing. Taking slippery elm a couple of hours apart from your dose usually sidesteps the worry. Always run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Slippery Elm

What is Slippery Elm?

Slippery Elm
  • Sore throat and cough
  • Heartburn and acid reflux
  • Digestive upset and IBS
  • Skin irritation (topical)
  • Constipation or diarrhea

Slippery elm is a traditional herbal remedy made from the inner bark of a North American elm tree, used mainly to soothe sore throats and irritated digestive tracts. Its mucilage can coat and calm mucous membranes, but solid human evidence for most uses is limited. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use, but you should still check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
