Smartweed and Rivaroxaban

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Rivaroxaban and Smartweed in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Smartweed safety at a glance

Smartweed overall Use caution There is little modern safety data, so use cautiously and talk to a healthcare provider first.
Pregnancy Avoid Traditionally used to affect menstruation and the uterus, so avoid during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid There is not enough safety information, so it is best to avoid while breastfeeding.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Rivaroxaban

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Rivaroxaban is filed under 5 classifications — including anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates. Smartweed has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being warfarin (coumadin) (moderate) — and none of Rivaroxaban’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Rivaroxaban’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Smartweed. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Rivaroxaban’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 5 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Bleeding in the gut Worth acting on mentioned in 10.5% of FDA reports for Rivaroxaban
  • Bleeding or bruising Worth acting on mentioned in 17.6% of FDA reports for Rivaroxaban
  • A stroke or mini-stroke Worth acting on
  • Blood clots Worth acting on
  • An irregular heartbeat Worth acting on
  • Cough
  • Vomiting

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Rivaroxaban. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 205,037 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Rivaroxaban that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Smartweed’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Smartweed side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Smartweed has no side effects.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Rivaroxaban

This page covers Smartweed only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Rivaroxaban page lists 285 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Danshen (major), Grapefruit (major), Piracetam (major) and St. John's Wort (major).

By severity: 5 major · 240 moderate · 40 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rivaroxaban page

“Grapefruit is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking rivaroxaban (Xarelto). It slows how the body clears this blood thinner, and higher levels mean more bleeding risk.”

About Smartweed

What is Smartweed?

Smartweed
  • Digestive upset
  • Minor skin irritation
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (traditional)
  • Wound and bleeding (traditional topical use)
  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support

Smartweed (Persicaria hydropiper) is a peppery wetland plant with a long history in traditional medicine for digestive complaints, bleeding, and skin problems. Modern human studies are very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. Because safety data are thin, it's best to use cautiously and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Persicaria hydropiper · Polygonaceae · Aerial parts (leaves, stems, and flowering tops); sometimes the whole plant · Tea, tincture, liquid extract, dried herb, and topical preparations

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Smartweed is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Smartweed record says about it on its own.

Smartweed: dosing

There is no well-established or standardized dose for smartweed. Because it has not been carefully studied in people, experts cannot recommend a safe and effective amount. If you choose to use a product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.

About Rivaroxaban

What Is Rivaroxaban Used For?

Brand name: Xarelto

Rivaroxaban helps prevent and treat harmful blood clots. Across products, adults use it to lower stroke risk in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and lower the chance those clots come back.

Rivaroxaban tablets are also used to prevent DVT after hip or knee replacement surgery and to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in acutely ill medical patients. With aspirin, they reduce major cardiovascular events in coronary artery disease (CAD) and major thrombotic vascular events in peripheral artery disease (PAD). Children use it too: rivaroxaban for oral suspension (and Xarelto and Rivaroxaban tablets) is for VTE treatment and recurrence prevention from birth to under 18 years, and for clot prevention in children 2 and older with congenital heart disease after the Fontan procedure.
