Glyburide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Spinach interacts with.

There are claims that spinach leaves have hypoglycemic effects. Evidence from clinical research suggests that consumption of a spinach-rich meal reduces post-meal blood glucose levels. Theoretically, spinach might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the simple version. Glyburide already works hard to bring your blood sugar down by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin. Spinach, especially in a spinach-heavy meal, may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Put the two together and they could, in theory, push your numbers a little lower than expected.

If blood sugar drops too far, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or confused. That said, this is based on pharmacology and a few studies, not strong proof, and a normal serving of spinach in your dinner is unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger question is concentrated spinach supplements. Keep checking your sugars as usual, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

What Is Glyburide Used For?

Brand names: Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase, Glycron, Micronized, Glynase PresTab, Albert Glyburide

Glyburide tablets are used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the body produces dangerous levels of acids called ketones).

Glyburide may be used alone or combined with metformin when metformin alone is not enough. It can also be used to help transition patients who are moving from insulin or other diabetes pills to a new regimen, under a doctor's guidance.
