Insulin determir falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Spinach interacts with.

There are claims that spinach leaves have hypoglycemic effects. Evidence from clinical research suggests that consumption of a spinach-rich meal reduces post-meal blood glucose levels. Theoretically, spinach might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the idea behind this one: some research hints that a spinach-heavy meal may nudge your blood sugar a little lower on its own. Since Levemir (insulin detemir) already works to bring blood sugar down, eating a lot of spinach could, in theory, add to that effect and make a low blood sugar episode slightly more likely. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, or a racing heart.

Honestly, this is a mild and mostly theoretical concern, and a normal serving of spinach as part of dinner is very unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger watch-out is spinach's vitamin K and oxalates for other reasons. If you're suddenly eating a lot more spinach, just keep an eye on your glucose readings and let your doctor or pharmacist know before changing any insulin dose.

Levemir (insulin detemir) is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is a basal insulin, meaning it works around the clock to keep background blood sugar levels steady.

Levemir is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood that requires a different type of insulin).
