Squalamine and Tolnaftate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Tolnaftate and Squalamine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Squalamine at all — not against Tolnaftate, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

This page covers Squalamine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Tolnaftate page lists 20 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tolnaftate page

“For anyone using tolnaftate (Tinactin), the antifungal in athlete's foot creams and sprays, activated charcoal is the interaction to understand before all others. It holds the only major rating among the 20 ingredients on file, since charcoal binds many medicines and can lower how much reaches the body, even drugs not given by mouth.”

About Squalamine

What is Squalamine?

  • Cancer (investigational)
  • Age-related macular degeneration (eye disease)
  • Antimicrobial / antiviral interest
  • Anti-angiogenesis (blocking new blood vessel growth)

Squalamine is a compound first found in the dogfish shark that has mainly been studied as an experimental drug, not as a common dietary supplement. Research has looked at it for cancer and certain eye diseases, but evidence in people is limited and it is not an approved or widely available treatment. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using any product claiming to contain it.

Originally isolated from the liver and tissues of the dogfish shark (Squalus acanthias); also made synthetically · Investigational drug forms (intravenous infusion, eye drops); not a typical over-the-counter dietary supplement

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Squalamine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Squalamine record says about it on its own.

Squalamine: dosing

There is no established or standardized dose of squalamine for use as a dietary supplement. Keep in mind that supplement quality and labeling are not always reliable, and a pharmacist can help you decide whether using such a product makes sense for you.
