Stevia and Riociguat

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Riociguat

Riociguat falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Stevia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining stevia or stevia constituents with antihypertensive agents might increase the risk of hypotension.
Stevia extract and stevioside might lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension. However, other clinical research suggests that stevioside does not significantly lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: riociguat (Adempas) already works by relaxing your blood vessels, which can lower your blood pressure. Stevia might nudge blood pressure down a little too. Put together, the theory is that the two could add up and leave you with lower-than-comfortable blood pressure, which can show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint when you stand up, or a headache.

I want to be honest about how shaky this concern is. It's based on how the compounds could behave, not on real-world reports, and even the blood pressure studies on stevia disagree with each other. Everyday sweetener amounts in your coffee or tea are very unlikely to matter. If you're thinking about concentrated stevia supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Stevia

What is Stevia?

  • Sugar substitute / sweetener
  • Blood sugar support in diabetes
  • Weight management
  • Blood pressure support
  • Reducing calorie intake

Stevia is a plant-based, calorie-free sweetener that is widely used as a sugar alternative and is considered safe in normal food amounts by major regulators. Purified stevia extracts have a good safety record, but evidence for medicinal benefits like lowering blood sugar or blood pressure is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using stevia supplements for any health condition.

About Riociguat

What Is Riociguat Used For?

Brand name: Adempas

Riociguat tablets — sold under the brand names Adempas and Riociguat — are approved for adults with two types of high blood pressure in the lungs. The first is chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), a condition caused by blood clots that have blocked or narrowed the arteries in the lungs. Riociguat is used when surgery has not fully fixed the problem, or when surgery is not an option.

The second is pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a progressive disease where the arteries in the lungs become stiff and narrowed. In PAH, riociguat helps improve exercise ability, functional class (how well you can get around day-to-day), and slows disease worsening. It can be used alone or combined with other PAH medicines called endothelin receptor antagonists or prostanoids.
