Chlormezanone falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might decrease the effects of anticholinergic drugs.
Syrian rue contains harmine. Animal research suggests that intravenous administration of harmine potentiates the effects of acetylcholine or increases acetylcholine levels.

Here's the gist with Chlormezanone (Trancopal), an older muscle relaxant and anti-anxiety medicine that has some drying, anticholinergic-type effects. The theory is that Syrian Rue contains harmine, which in animal studies seemed to raise or boost acetylcholine. Since chlormezanone partly works by quieting that same signaling, more acetylcholine around could blunt what the medication is doing, so you might notice less of its calming or muscle-relaxing benefit.

I want to be honest: this is purely theoretical and comes from animal research, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, Syrian Rue carries its own toxicity risks and isn't something I'd recommend self-treating with. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

What is Syrian Rue?

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment.
