Here's the concern when you pair Syrian Rue with phenytoin: both can be tough on the liver. Phenytoin is processed by the liver and, in some people, it can already stress that organ. Syrian Rue in large amounts has been linked to liver injury and even liver failure, so stacking the two could theoretically raise your risk of liver problems. Watch for warning signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, unusual tiredness, or nausea.

I want to be honest with you: this is a theoretical worry based on how these things behave, and the reported liver damage came from people swallowing very large quantities (up to 100 grams) of the seeds. Still, since phenytoin needs careful liver handling and steady blood levels, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What is Syrian Rue?

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. About Phenytoin

What Is Phenytoin Used For?

Brand names: Dilantin Kapseals, Dilantin, Di-Phen, Dilantin Infatabs, Phenytek, Dilantin injection

Phenytoin is used to treat and prevent seizures. The specific types covered depend on the formulation. Oral extended-release capsules (including Phenytek), chewable tablets (including Dilantin Infatabs and Phenytoin Infatabs), and oral suspension (including Dilantin-125) are used for tonic-clonic (grand mal) and psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures; most oral forms also cover prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or after neurosurgery. Chewable tablets and some capsule formulations also cover complex partial seizures.

Parenteral (injectable) phenytoin sodium is used for generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus (a prolonged, life-threatening seizure emergency) and for prevention and treatment of seizures during neurosurgery. The IV form can also substitute short-term for oral phenytoin when a patient cannot take it by mouth.
