ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ipratropium, Albuterol
Ipratropium, Albuterol falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.
Syrian rue contains harmine. Animal research suggests that intravenous administration of harmine potentiates the effects of acetylcholine or increases acetylcholine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Combivent combines two inhaled medicines: ipratropium, which is an anticholinergic that opens your airways by blocking acetylcholine, and albuterol, a quick-acting bronchodilator. The concern here is really about the ipratropium piece. Syrian Rue's harmala alkaloids may raise acetylcholine levels, and since ipratropium works by blocking that same chemical, the two could theoretically work against each other.
In plain terms, Syrian Rue might blunt how well your inhaler keeps your airways open, leaving you more short of breath or wheezy. I want to be honest though: this is based only on animal lab work, not real-world cases, so the risk is uncertain. Given Syrian Rue's other toxicity concerns, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ipratropium, Albuterol page
“Combivent (ipratropium with albuterol) is an inhaler that opens the airways two ways at once, by blocking acetylcholine and stimulating beta receptors, and both mechanisms give supplements a route to pile on. Its list of 45 interacting ingredients warrants real attention, chiefly because two rate major: henbane and scopolia, herbs whos…”

About Syrian Rue
What is Syrian Rue?
- Traditional remedy for digestive complaints
- Used as a sedative or for mood
- Antimicrobial and antiparasitic folk use
- Used as a dye and incense
- Recreational psychoactive use
Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before considering it.
