Cases of hepatotoxicity and hepatic failure have been reported in patients who ingested a large quantity (up to 100 grams) of Syrian rue seeds.

Here's the gist with your norgestrel mini-pill and Syrian Rue. This isn't about one speeding up or slowing down the other. The concern is that both can put a little stress on your liver. Like many hormones, norgestrel is processed through the liver, and Syrian Rue in large amounts has been linked to liver injury. Stack two liver stressors and, in theory, you raise the risk of trouble.

To be fair, this is a theoretical worry based on how things work, and the reported liver problems came from eating very large amounts of seeds (up to 100 grams), not normal cooking or tiny doses. Still, watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual fatigue, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Syrian rue contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine, harmol, and harmane. In vitro research suggests that these beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes.

Norgestrel is a progestin in your mini-pill, and your body relies on the liver enzyme CYP3A4 to break it down. Lab studies suggest the harmala alkaloids in Syrian Rue can block that enzyme. In theory, slowing this breakdown could let more norgestrel build up in your system, which might mean more progestin side effects like breakthrough spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, mood changes, or nausea.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based only on test-tube research, not real people, so we can't say for sure it happens. Beyond that, Syrian Rue carries real toxicity risks of its own and isn't recommended for self-treatment. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
