Butabarbital Sodium falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tarragon interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that tarragon essential oil can cause sedation and motor impairment when administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 1 mL/kg. Theoretically, concomitant use of tarragon with CNS depressants, including antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and tricyclic antidepressants, may increase sedative and other adverse effects.

Butabarbital is a barbiturate, a strong central nervous system depressant that slows down brain activity to help with sleep or calm nerves. On its own it can already make you drowsy, foggy, slow to react, and unsteady on your feet. The concern here is simply adding one sedating thing on top of another.

The signal for tarragon is weak. It comes from animal research using concentrated tarragon essential oil injected at high doses, not from people sprinkling the herb on food. Cooking amounts are very unlikely to matter. Still, concentrated tarragon supplements or oil could, in theory, deepen the sleepiness and impairment butabarbital causes. To be safe, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
