ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Metformin XR
Metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Theaflavin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Metformin XR and theaflavin: this isn't about one slowing down the other in your liver. Instead, both can nudge your blood sugar in the same direction. Metformin already works to lower glucose, and early research hints that theaflavin (the antioxidant in black tea) may have its own mild sugar-lowering effect. Stack them and you could, in theory, get a little extra drop.
I'll be honest, this is based mostly on animal studies and a small bit of human data, so it's more of a theoretical heads-up than a proven problem. A cup or two of black tea is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated extracts are the bigger question mark. If you take one regularly, keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, or dizziness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Metformin XR
This page covers Theaflavin only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Metformin XR page lists 256 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 215 moderate · 39 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metformin XR page
“Siberian cocklebur stands alone at the top of this list; its seeds have caused severe low blood sugar in humans, and no one taking metformin XR (Glucophage XR) should use it. Almost everything else here, 239 of the 256 ingredients, affects blood sugar too, so this list earns real caution.”

About Theaflavin
What is Theaflavin?
- Heart health and cholesterol support
- Antioxidant support
- Weight management
- Blood sugar support
- General wellness
Theaflavins are antioxidant compounds formed when tea leaves are oxidized to make black tea. Early research suggests they may help with cholesterol and provide antioxidant effects, but high-quality human evidence is limited and doses are not standardized. Drinking black tea is generally safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated extracts.
