Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Ortho-Prefest (estradiol plus norgestimate) and thyme. In test-tube studies, compounds in thyme can latch onto estrogen receptors, the same docking spots your estradiol works through. The theory is that thyme might compete with your hormone therapy and slightly blunt its effect. If that happened, you might notice menopausal symptoms creeping back, like hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal dryness.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from lab research, and this effect has not been seen in actual people. Everyday cooking amounts of thyme are very unlikely to do anything. If you're thinking about regular thyme supplements or thyme oil, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme
  • Cough and respiratory congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial and antiseptic uses
  • Flavoring in cooking

Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive complaints. It is generally safe in the amounts found in food, and some cough products that combine thyme with other herbs have modest supporting evidence, but high-quality research on thyme alone is limited. The concentrated essential oil should never be swallowed undiluted.
