Thyme and Estrone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ESTROGENS

Why this applies to Estrone

Estrone falls under ESTROGENS — the group Thyme interacts with.

Theoretically, thyme might competitively inhibit the effects of estrogen replacement therapy.
In vitro research shows that thyme has estrogen receptor-binding activity and phytoestrogen content. However, this effect has not been observed in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Estrone is a form of estrogen replacement, often prescribed to ease menopause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. The concern here is that thyme contains plant chemicals (phytoestrogens) that can attach to the same estrogen receptors your medicine works on. In theory, thyme could compete for those spots and slightly blunt how well your estrone works, possibly letting some of those symptoms creep back.

Here is the important part: this comes only from lab dish studies, and it has not been seen in real people. The small amount of thyme you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to cause any problem. If you are taking concentrated thyme supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Estrone page

“Hormone therapy lives or dies by a steady blood level, and estrone (Ortho-Est), an estrogen taken mostly for menopause symptoms, is no exception, so this list calls for genuine care. The two major-rated entries among the 77 both change how much estrone your body actually gets: grapefruit raises estrogen levels by blocking the enzyme th…”

About Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme
  • Cough and respiratory congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial and antiseptic uses
  • Flavoring in cooking

Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive complaints. It is generally safe in the amounts found in food, and some cough products that combine thyme with other herbs have modest supporting evidence, but high-quality research on thyme alone is limited. The concentrated essential oil should never be swallowed undiluted.
