Theoretically, thyme might competitively inhibit the effects of estrogen replacement therapy.
In vitro research shows that thyme has estrogen receptor-binding activity and phytoestrogen content. However, this effect has not been observed in humans.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your birth control pill (Minastrin or LoMinastrin) contains estrogen plus a progestin, and it also has a little iron in some of the tablets. The concern on file is purely theoretical. In test tube studies, compounds in thyme can latch onto estrogen receptors, so researchers wondered if thyme might nudge out some of the estrogen's activity. Importantly, this has never actually been seen in people.

So in practice, the small amount of thyme you'd use to season food, or even in a cough product, is very unlikely to weaken your pill or affect how well it prevents pregnancy. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you're using concentrated thyme supplements daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

About Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme
  • Cough and respiratory congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial and antiseptic uses
  • Flavoring in cooking

Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive complaints. It is generally safe in the amounts found in food, and some cough products that combine thyme with other herbs have modest supporting evidence, but high-quality research on thyme alone is limited. The concentrated essential oil should never be swallowed undiluted.
