Thymus Extract and Adalimumab

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Adalimumab

Adalimumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Thymus Extract interacts with.

Theoretically, patients taking immunosuppressants may be at an increased risk of infection from contaminated thymus extract.
Thymus extract is derived from raw bovine thymus glands and is at risk for contamination. Tell patients to avoid thymus extract products unless these products are certified as pathogen-free.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Humira (adalimumab). This isn't a clash where one changes the blood levels of the other. The concern is different. Humira works by quieting down part of your immune system, which is exactly what helps with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's. The downside is that it makes you more prone to infections.

Thymus extract is made from raw animal (bovine) thymus glands, so there's a real worry it could carry germs. In someone whose defenses are already lowered by Humira, that's a problem. This is a theoretical caution based on how these products work, not proven cases. Still, I'd play it safe and avoid thymus extract unless it's certified pathogen-free. Please run it by your doctor or pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Adalimumab page

“Adalimumab (Humira) works by dialing down an overactive immune system, which is what makes this list so uniform: all 53 supplements on file are flagged for one reason, they may stimulate immunity and could, in theory, blunt the drug's effect. None of the interactions is rated major (52 are moderate, one minor), so for most people this…”

About Thymus Extract

What is Thymus Extract?

  • Immune system support
  • Frequent infections
  • Allergies
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Cancer supportive care

Thymus extract is a glandular product made from the thymus tissue of animals, and it is promoted mainly for immune support. The evidence is mostly limited, preliminary, or from older studies, so it should not replace proven treatments. Because it is an animal-tissue product, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a serious medical condition.
