Thymus Extract and abatacept

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to abatacept

abatacept falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Thymus Extract interacts with.

Theoretically, patients taking immunosuppressants may be at an increased risk of infection from contaminated thymus extract.
Thymus extract is derived from raw bovine thymus glands and is at risk for contamination. Tell patients to avoid thymus extract products unless these products are certified as pathogen-free.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to understand: this isn't a chemical tug-of-war where one product changes how the other works in your bloodstream. Abatacept (Orencia) calms down part of your immune system to ease the joint pain, swelling, and stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis. The concern with thymus extract is different. Because it's made from raw cow thymus glands, it can carry germs, and your body may have a harder time fighting those off while you're on abatacept.

This worry is theoretical, based on how the products work rather than reported cases, so try not to panic. Still, with your immune defenses dialed down, an infection could hit harder. I'd skip thymus extract unless it's certified pathogen-free, and check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the abatacept page

“Abatacept (Orencia) treats rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions by dialing down immune activity, so the supplements that matter here are the ones pulling in the opposite direction. All 53 ingredients on this list share that single theme: herbs and mushrooms with immune-stimulating properties, echinacea, ashwagandha, and astragal…”

About Thymus Extract

What is Thymus Extract?

  • Immune system support
  • Frequent infections
  • Allergies
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Cancer supportive care

Thymus extract is a glandular product made from the thymus tissue of animals, and it is promoted mainly for immune support. The evidence is mostly limited, preliminary, or from older studies, so it should not replace proven treatments. Because it is an animal-tissue product, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a serious medical condition.
