Thymus Extract and Cladribine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Cladribine

Cladribine falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Thymus Extract interacts with.

Theoretically, patients taking immunosuppressants may be at an increased risk of infection from contaminated thymus extract.
Thymus extract is derived from raw bovine thymus glands and is at risk for contamination. Tell patients to avoid thymus extract products unless these products are certified as pathogen-free.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing thymus extract with Cladribine (Leustatin or Mavenclad). This isn't a chemical clash where one changes how the other is broken down. Cladribine works by knocking down certain immune cells, so while you're on it your defenses against germs are already lowered.

Thymus extract is made from raw animal (cow) thymus glands, and that kind of product can carry germs if it isn't carefully purified. So the real worry is infection. If a contaminated supplement got into someone whose immune system is already suppressed by Cladribine, an infection could take hold more easily. This concern is theoretical, based on how things work rather than proven cases, but the safe move is simple: please check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any thymus product, and only consider ones certified pathogen-free.

About Thymus Extract

What is Thymus Extract?

  • Immune system support
  • Frequent infections
  • Allergies
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Cancer supportive care

Thymus extract is a glandular product made from the thymus tissue of animals, and it is promoted mainly for immune support. The evidence is mostly limited, preliminary, or from older studies, so it should not replace proven treatments. Because it is an animal-tissue product, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a serious medical condition.

About Cladribine

What Is Cladribine Used For?

Brand names: Leustatin, Mavenclad

Cladribine has two different uses, depending on the product.

Cladribine tablets (including Mavenclad) treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis in adults. This includes relapsing-remitting disease and active secondary progressive disease. Because of its safety profile, it is generally used after another MS drug has not worked well enough or could not be tolerated. It is not recommended for clinically isolated syndrome (CIS).

Cladribine injection (intravenous) treats active hairy cell leukemia. That means disease with clinically significant anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia or disease-related symptoms.
