Here's the thinking with abatacept (Orencia). This medicine works by calming down an overactive immune system to ease the joint pain and swelling of rheumatoid arthritis. Andrographis seems to do the opposite in lab studies, gently revving the immune system up. So in theory, taking the herb could push against what your medication is trying to do and make it less effective, meaning your joint symptoms might creep back.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this concern comes only from test tube and animal research, not real patients, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, since you depend on abatacept to keep your arthritis quiet, I'd check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding andrographis rather than starting it on your own.

What Is Abatacept Injection Used For?

Brand name: Orencia

Orencia is approved for adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and adults and children 2 years and older with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA) or moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) — a type of arthritis that affects multiple joints in children.

Orencia is also used, alongside two other medicines (a calcineurin inhibitor and methotrexate), to prevent acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD) — a serious immune reaction — in adults and children 2 and older who receive a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor.
