Andrographis and Diclofenac Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Diclofenac Sodium

Diclofenac Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Andrographis interacts with.

Theoretically, andrographis might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal and laboratory studies suggest that andrographis has antiplatelet effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with diclofenac and andrographis. Diclofenac is an NSAID, and NSAIDs already nudge up your bleeding risk a little because they affect how platelets stick together and can irritate the stomach lining. Andrographis, in lab and animal studies, seems to have its own mild blood-thinning (antiplatelet) effect. Put the two together and, in theory, you could bump that bleeding risk a bit higher.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube and animal research, not real-world human cases. So no need to panic. Still, watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, black or tarry stools, or stomach upset. If you take both regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Diclofenac Sodium page

“Diclofenac (Voltaren), a daily mainstay for arthritis and joint pain, comes with a supplement list that calls for real vigilance. Of the 308 ingredients on file, 7 rate major, and roughly two hundred entries share a single theme: anything with blood-thinning activity adds to diclofenac's own bleeding risk, especially in the stomach.”

Andrographis
  • Common cold and flu symptoms

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Immune support
  • Digestive complaints

Andrographis is a bitter Asian herb traditionally used for colds, flu, and infections, and some studies suggest it may ease cold symptoms and shorten how long they last. The evidence is limited and the quality of studies varies, so it should not replace standard care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy.
