ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Warfarin Sodium
Warfarin Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Andrographis interacts with.
Animal and laboratory studies suggest that andrographis has antiplatelet effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the deal with pairing andrographis and warfarin. Warfarin is already a powerful blood thinner, and it's what we call a narrow-therapeutic-index drug, meaning the gap between too little and too much is small. Lab and animal studies hint that andrographis may have its own mild antiplatelet (clot-slowing) activity. Stacking that on top of warfarin could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk up a bit.
I want to be honest though: this is mostly theoretical and based on test-tube and animal research, not solid human studies. Still, with warfarin, small changes matter. Watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or dark stools. Don't start or stop anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and they may want to keep an eye on your INR.

About Andrographis
What is Andrographis?
- Common cold and flu symptoms
- Upper respiratory infections
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Immune support
- Digestive complaints
Andrographis is a bitter Asian herb traditionally used for colds, flu, and infections, and some studies suggest it may ease cold symptoms and shorten how long they last. The evidence is limited and the quality of studies varies, so it should not replace standard care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy.
About Warfarin
What Is Warfarin Used For?
Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin
Warfarin helps prevent and treat harmful blood clots. The label lists these uses for both Warfarin Sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets:
- Preventing and treating venous thrombosis (clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (clots in the lungs).
- Preventing and treating clot-related complications of atrial fibrillation and/or heart valve replacement.
- Lowering the risk of death, another heart attack, and clot-related events such as stroke after a heart attack.
Warfarin does not dissolve a clot that has already formed. It helps stop the clot from growing and prevents further clot-related complications.
